What to Pack for Kashmir -A Practical Packing Guide

A clear, season-aware packing guide for Kashmir covering clothing, footwear, electronics, health essentials, and the items most travelers forget.

Packing for Kashmir is not complicated, but getting it right makes a noticeable difference to your comfort. The valley's weather changes with altitude and season, and mornings can feel twenty degrees different from afternoons. This guide covers what to carry, what to leave behind, and what adjustments to make based on when you are traveling.

Clothing essentials

Layering is the fundamental principle. Even in summer, Kashmir evenings and early mornings are cool. A base layer (cotton or merino), a mid-layer (fleece or light sweater), and an outer shell (waterproof jacket) covers most scenarios.

In spring and summer, pack light trousers, comfortable shirts, a few warmer layers for evenings, and one heavier jacket for higher altitudes like Gulmarg. In autumn, add a warmer fleece or down jacket. In winter, thermals are essential – invest in quality base layers, a proper down jacket, and windproof outerwear.

Footwear

Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes are necessary for all seasons. You will be walking on uneven garden paths, hill trails, and occasionally wet surfaces. Avoid open-toed sandals for sightseeing days.

For winter trips, waterproof insulated boots with good traction are essential. Snow and ice make regular shoes dangerous. If you are visiting Gulmarg for snow activities, consider gaiters to keep snow out of your boots. A pair of warm socks -wool or synthetic insulating material -makes a bigger difference than most travelers expect.

Electronics and photography

Bring a portable charger -you will be using your phone camera frequently, and battery drains faster in cold weather. A universal adapter is useful for older hotel outlets. If you are serious about photography, a lightweight tripod helps for landscape and low-light shots.

In winter, keep your phone and camera batteries close to your body when outdoors. Cold temperatures can drain batteries rapidly. Store them in an inner pocket and swap them in when needed.

Health and pharmacy essentials

Carry a basic pharmacy kit: pain relief, antacids, band-aids, any personal prescription medication, motion sickness tablets if you are sensitive to mountain roads, and a basic cold-and-flu remedy. Pharmacies exist in Srinagar but may not stock specific brands.

Sunscreen is important year-round -UV exposure increases with altitude, and the reflection off snow in winter intensifies it further. Lip balm with SPF protection, sunglasses with UV filtering, and moisturiser for dry skin are small items that make daily comfort significantly better.

Documents and practical items

Carry a valid photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, or voter ID) -it is required at checkpoints and for hotel check-ins. Keep digital and physical copies of your travel itinerary, booking confirmations, and emergency contacts.

A lightweight day bag (20–25 litres) is useful for daily excursions so you are not carrying your full luggage. Pack a refillable water bottle, a small pack of tissues, and a ziplock bag for wet or muddy items. These small practical items prevent minor inconveniences from becoming daily frustrations.

Seasonal packing adjustments

Spring (March–May): Light layers, a medium jacket, rain jacket, comfortable shoes. Summer (June–August): Lighter clothing, sunscreen, rain gear, one warm layer for evenings. Autumn (September–November): Warmer layers, medium-weight jacket, scarf or light shawl. Winter (December–February): Full thermal set, heavy down jacket, insulated waterproof boots, gloves, wool cap, hand warmers.

Regardless of season, pack one outfit that is slightly more formal than your sightseeing clothes -for special dinners, houseboat evenings, or moments where you want to feel dressed up without being overdressed.

FAQs

Common questions

No. Summer temperatures in Kashmir are pleasant and snow is limited to very high altitudes. A warm jacket for evenings and higher-altitude excursions is sufficient.

Basic winter items like shawls, caps, and gloves can be purchased in Srinagar. However, quality insulated outerwear and thermal layers are better purchased before your trip to ensure the right fit and warmth.

One medium suitcase and one day bag per person is usually sufficient for a 5–7 day trip. Avoid overpacking -Kashmir travel involves some vehicle transfers where lighter luggage is more practical.
